Old Moor Wetlands

At the other side of Sheffield from me is an RSPB site at Old Moor in the Dearne Valley. This is a link to the Old Moor page on the RSPB website. It is a great place to take photos of birds - obviously - and easy to practice your setups and tracking shots. There are many substantial hides where you can set up but you will need a long lens because the hides are a long way from the action and the subjects tend to be on the small side and move very quickly.

Fortunately the day I went there was a heron right in front of the hide and these birds don’t move very quickly so it was easy to get some good photos of him. Even airborne they don’t move very fast. This was taken with my Nikon 18-200mm lens at 200mm, F22 and 1/250th.
